Leaves and Roots
What makes a tree grow? Where do trees get the energy to grow?
A tree starts as a seed. These seeds are very small, but have an incredible potential.
The seed is buried in the dirt.
And slowly, the seed begins to grow. But where does the energy come from?
The tree grows leaves and the sun shines on them. The sun gives the tree energy. This helps the tree grow up.
As a tree grows, it needs more energy, so it grows bigger leaves. This helps the tree get more energy from the sun.
And as the tree grows even bigger, it gets even more leaves, so it can get even more energy from the sun.
But also the tree grows down. The tree grows longer and longer roots.
The roots drink the water. The water helps the tree grow even more.
As the tree gets bigger and bigger, so the roots get longer and longer.
And the growth continues. The roots get longer. Not only do the roots drink water, they also keep the tree up. A big tree needs long roots.
This happens until, finally, the tree is huge! Imagine the roots under this tree!
This is why trees need a lot of sun and a lot of water. They help the tree grow big.
